What do you look for in a new mattress?
Comfort? Support? Quality?
They’re all the usual things on a buyer’s wish list. But what about sustainability?
To help protect the environment and reverse climate damage, more and more people are (quite rightly!) looking to invest in products that are eco-friendly – and when it comes to sustainable mattresses, it’s fair to say, Hypnos is certainly leading the way.
Over the last decade, this pioneering brand has undergone a comprehensive sustainability journey – one that has led them to become the first carbon-neutral bedmaker in the world. In fact, they’re the only manufacturer to have held this title for 10 years.
9550 tonnes of CO2 have been offset so far and the brand has received multiple awards to recognise their ‘relentless pursuit of truly sustainable beds’. For example, Hypnos was recently presented with the Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development. And in 2021, they achieved Planet Mark’s Carbon Neutral Certification – a highly distinguished sustainability accolade for UK businesses.
If you’re looking to invest in an environmentally viable product, this is the brand for you. Here we take a closer look at why.
Hypnos mattresses that combine comfort and integrity
To tackle their carbon footprint, Hypnos has implemented a number of robust measures:
1. Sustainably designed products
All Hypnos mattresses are free from synthetic chemical-based foams and made from 100% natural fibres – the type that can be fully recycled and won’t end up at a landfill site.
For example, recent collections have been created using ethically sourced cotton and wool sourced via Red Tractor. Some mattresses have also been manufactured using eOlusTM – a sustainable fibre made from recycled bottles, sourced in compliance with the Global Recycled Standard.
By using these traceable materials, Hypnos have successfully created ‘carbon zero’ beds, which have zero impact on the environment at the point of purchase. They’ve also recycled the equivalent of 235,000,000 plastic bottles and helped to prevent pollution of oceans and land.
2. Eco-friendly packaging
Hypnos are also the first company to create a recyclable eco-friendly packaging solution.
The solution took over 18 months of intensive research to develop and uses sugar cane – a renewable and carbon dioxide depleting resource – to eliminate the use of harmful fossil-based products. Essentially, sugar cane ethanol is combined with recycled plastic to form a green polyethylene, which is carbon neutral and 100% recyclable.
To promote change within the industry, Hypnos also decided not to patent or trademark this packaging. Instead, it’s calling on other leading mattress brands to follow in its footsteps and ditch single-use polyethylene in favour of this effective alternative.
3. Social responsibility programmes
In addition to their sustainable bed designs, Hypnos has also adopted several social responsibility programmes and are now involved in many certified climate projects.
For example, they’ve planted over 5000 trees in the UK and the Amazon Rainforest. They’ve engaged local schools and conservation groups in tree planting programmes, designed to sequester carbon and build biodiversity. They’ve also helped to repair boreholes and provide access to clean water for communities in Rwanda and Uganda.
This is a brand that is passionate about its social impact – one that is striving to make the world a better place, through its green initiatives and local community support.
