Last month was ‘National Bed Month’ – hosted by The Sleep Charity and Bed Advice UK. The annual campaign aims to increase awareness of the importance of a good night’s sleep. And for 2022, the theme was ‘waking up on the #rightsideofthebed, with the right bed’.
To contribute to the campaign, Natalie Pennicotte-Collier – the resident sleep specialist at Hypnos – has released a new useful acrostic to help people R.I.S.E refreshed each morning.
This spells out a simple daily routine that’s backed by science. According to Natalie, following the R.I.S.E method consistently – for just 7 days – can not only lead to a significant improvement in the quality of our sleep, but also our overall health and mental well-being.
So what do you have to lose? Why not give it a go this week? Here we take a closer look at what exactly it involves and explore why a Hypnos bed could be a worthwhile investment.
The R.I.S.E routine by Hypnos
R einforce your circadian rhythm
Your circadian rhythm is the natural process that regulates your sleep-wake cycle. Essentially, it’s your internal body clock, which repeats every 24 hours. And for you to feel alert, it needs to follow the same pattern every day. Even small shifts can have a big impact on your sleep and health.
That’s why it’s important to wake up and go to sleep at a fixed time every day. Jumping out of bed at 6am may not be very pleasant, and you may wish to squeeze in another episode of your favourite TV programme at 11pm. But by sticking to the same rigid routine, you will feel a lot better.
I nvite light into the room
As soon as you get out of bed, open up the curtains and flood the room with some natural daylight.
It doesn’t matter whether the sun is shining or it’s another dull and drizzly day. The light will reset your internal body clock, helping to banish any grogginess. And this simple technique has been scientifically proven to improve the quality of your sleep and boost your overall wellbeing.
S pend time outside
Ensuring that you get a good night’s sleep starts during the day.
You need to get outside, be active and enjoy some fresh air. Perhaps you could go for a quick jog before you start work? Or take the dog for a walk around the local park at lunchtime?
Ideally, you should try to do at least 30 minutes of outdoor exercise per day. But if that’s not possible, just spending 5 minutes in your garden can have a massive impact. Not only does it make it easier for you to wind down, leading to deeper sleep, it can also improve your mental health.
E mbrace dusk light
Again, this comes down to your circadian rhythm. Exposure to the natural light of dusk can help to synchronise your internal body clock, helping you to drop off and enjoy a much better night’s sleep.
A leisurely evening walk is a great option. Or you could simply stand in your garden for 5-10 minutes.
You should also try to avoid the use of electronic devices at least one hour before bedtime. These devices emit a blue light, which prevents the production of melatonin (i.e. the hormone that makes us sleepy) and can have a significant detrimental effect on the pattern and quality of your sleep.
