Classic Duke Divan Bed
Our Stuart James Classic Duke Divan Bed will make you feel deeply supported. 1500 handmade vanadium steel pocket springs, along with 2750g per square metre of luxury layers will create the most tranquil sleep. The Classic Duke Divan Bed is recommended with our Stuart James Platform Top Divan Base. To complete the Duke, we have a zonal edge spring system and 2 rows of genuine hand side stitching for the utmost edge to edge support, allowing you to enjoy the full sleeping width of the mattress. It truly is a luxurious extra firm Divan Bed, handmade in the U.K.
Pocket Springs
The Classic Duke mattress has a single Spring System, with ONE layer of 1500 vanadium steel pocket springs, 1500 springs in total within a 150cm king size mattress. The springs are a firm tension, giving the Duke an overall individual, supportive comfort.
Our springs are handmade in the U.K using vanadium steel, which is the highest-grade steel you can use for a spring. Vanadium steel prolongs the life of the springs and ensures they are more resilient, stronger and moisture resistant.
Luxury Layers
The Classic Duke boasts 2750GSM luxury layers of the most high-end luxury fillings on both sides of the mattress. This is made up of six layers including Lamb’s Wool, Cashmere, Silk, and Cotton. A full detail of each layer is available below, we choose and test every layer to ensure it provides the correct feel and support. We guarantee that our spring system and luxury layers will provide a long-lasting support.
Handmade & Edge Support
All our Classic mattresses feature a zonal edge spring system. Our pocket springs are zoned at the edge to provide you with superior edge to edge support, so you can enjoy the full sleeping width of your mattress. Combined with two rows of genuine hand side stitching, this provides the ultimate edge to edge support.
The hand side stitching is performed by a master craftsman, it takes many years to perfect this skill and it takes over 2 hours to give our Classic Duke 2 rows. The side stitching not only creates additional edge support, but it is key to longevity.
Divan Bed
The Duke is recommended with our Stuart James Solid Platform Top Base, this luxurious and handcrafted base will complement the Duke’s comfort, offering further support for the perfect night’s sleep.
All our Stuart James Divan Beds come with many storage options, our drawers are handmade and built to a high quality to ensure you can make use of the available space. We have an End Lift Ottoman available for the ultimate storage solution, however this isn’t available with a pocket sprung base.

Edge Support
Zoned Springs
With four luxury rows of genuine hand side stitching and a zonal edge spring system, you will be able to enjoy the full sleeping width of your mattress. There are too many handmade mattresses that neglect the edge support, one of the many reasons why we created Stuart James Beds. The zonal edge spring system is exquisite, we use a firmer gauge wire on the springs around the edge of the mattress – as highlighted in the image.

Our Duke display model is exactly as pictured on our website, finished in the luxury Lava Stone fabric and paired with the matching Alexandra Footboard. Genuine Hand Side Stitching U.K. Made
Genuine hand side stitching will give you additional edge to edge support. It takes many years to become an expert and it takes over 3 hours for a master craftsman to manually stitch four rows of side stitching into our Duchess mattress. The side stitching not only creates additional edge support but is key to longevity. We want your mattress to last you many years and this will increase the durability of your mattress and spring.

What type of base do you recommend for a Stuart James Divan Bed?
Every Stuart James Divan Bed offers a different comfort, therefore the base recommended is different for every mattress and for you as an individual. Our Stuart James Regal Duchess Divan Bed for example is recommended with a pocket sprung base as it offers a sumptuously soft comfort and the base not only complements that but ensures you receive a superior support. Where as the Stuart James Regal Princess offers a firm support which is why we would recommend a solid platform top base to reinforce that support. However, our Stuart James Regal Emperor feels great on both a pocket sprung base and a solid platform top. The recommendation would come down to you as an individual. The pocket sprung base offers the true regal, luxury deep comfort with plenty of support from the spring system. Where as, the solid platform top base will offer a further support.
What storage options are available for Stuart James Beds?
All our Stuart James Beds are available with 2 Drawers or 4 Drawers. You can always order a Stuart James Divan Bed with 0 drawers, but a touch of storage is always handy for bedding. If you have been known to overload drawers, our End Lift Ottoman offers the Ultimate Storage Solution and is highly recommended. Our End Lift Ottoman is handmade, reinforced and will allow you to utilise so much wasted space if you haven’t had an ottoman previously.
What are vanadium steel springs?
Our calico springs are made in the U.K. using the finest vanadium steel springs, which are calico encased. A standard spring is encased with a polyprop cover, where as calico is 100% cotton, even the thread. This allows the spring to be far more flexible, durable and provide a far more responsive support.
What does GSM mean?
We refer to GSM when we talk about the amount of layers we put in our mattresses. We want you to know exactly what is in the mattress and what you are paying for. GSM stands for grams per square metre. For example, in our Regal Queen mattress you will find 1200g Laywool, 250g Pashmina, 200g Peruvian White Alpaca, 1000g Alpaca, 1000g Wool/Cotton. This is a total of 3650grams but that’s how many grams is in every square metre of the mattress. All our mattresses are also completely reversible, so the comfort is exactly the same on both sides – that’s a lot of filling!
