Regal Emperor Mattress
The Stuart James Regal Emperor is our most prestigious mattress, offering a luxury medium – firm comfort with nine regal layers of upholstery including White Peruvian Alpaca and Pashmina. Calico Springs
The Emperor’s initial support is provided by TWO layers of 1260 calico encased vanadium steel pocket springs, 2520 springs in total within a 150cm king size mattress. The Emperor is offered with a medium or a firm spring tension. The medium – firm tension we describe the Emperor to be is based off the medium spring tension. If you would prefer this to be a touch firmer, the firmer spring tension may be for you.
The mattress can be all one tension with either spring or we offer the dual spring system. The dual spring system offers a bespoke comfort, allowing you to have different tensions on each side of the mattress. The split tension is a perfect solution for different weighted sleepers and for couples who have different sleeping preferences. Why compromise on comfort when you bespoke the Regal Emperor to you.
Our springs are handmade in the U.K using vanadium steel, which is the highest-grade steel you can use for a spring. Vanadium steel prolongs the life of the springs and ensures they are more resilient, stronger and moisture resistant. Our vanadium steel springs are calico encased and are 100% cotton, even the thread. This allows the springs to offer a flexible, more durable and far more responsive support when compared to a standard polyprop pocket spring.
Luxury Layers
The Regal Emperor has 6200GSM luxury layers of the most high-end luxury fillings on both sides of the mattress. This is made up of nine layers including 1200g Alpaca, 1200g Horsehair, 500g Pashmina and Wool, Silk & Cashmere. A full detail of each layer is available below, we choose and test every layer to ensure it provides the correct feel and support. We guarantee that our spring system and luxury layers will provide a long-lasting support.
Handmade & Edge Support
The Regal Emperor Mattress is handmade in the U.K. Handcrafted using the finest natural luxurious materials with a beautiful silk damask cover. The hand side stitching is handcrafted, this takes many years to perfect this skill and it takes over 3 hours to give our Regal Emperor mattress four rows. The Hand side stitching not only creates additional edge support, but it is key to the longevity of your mattress. Our mattresses are hand tufted which is the hallmark of a quality mattress.
The Regal Emperor mattress has the ultimate edge to edge support due to the feature of a zonal edge spring system combined with four rows of genuine hand side stitching. Our calico springs are zoned at the edge of the mattress to provide you with a superior edge to edge support so you can enjoy the full sleeping width of your mattress.
Hand Tufting
All our Stuart James mattresses are handmade and hand tufted. Hand tufting is the sign of a quality, traditional mattress. It is an age on method by which layers in a mattress are held together and the process anchors the layers of filling by driving a long needle and tufting straps all the way through the mattress. The luxurious layers are pulled together through the springs and then are bound on each side of the mattress, extending the longevity and providing an overall better support.

A standard spring is encased with a polyprop cover, where as calico is 100% cotton, even the thread. This allows the spring to be far more flexible, durable and provide a far more responsible support.

Our Regal design allows you to bespoke your comfort, the Emperor has a dual spring system – you can choose between a medium or firm tension spring. As individuals, everyone is a different weight and everyone will feel a mattress differently. You can have the mattress all one tension of you can even choose different tensions on each side.

6200 grams per square metre
The Emperor is made up of nine luxury layers of upholstery to give you a regal comfort. There are 6200 grams per square metre of filling which consists of Peruvian White Alpaca, Pashmina, Laywool and more. Edge Support
Zoned Springs
With four luxury rows of genuine hand side stitching and a zonal edge spring system, you will be able to enjoy the full sleeping width of your mattress. There are too many handmade mattresses that neglect the edge support, one of the many reasons why we created Stuart James Beds. The zonal edge spring system is exquisite, we use a firmer gauge wire on the springs around the edge of the mattress – as highlighted in the image.

Genuine Hand Side Stitching U.K. Made
Genuine hand side stitching will give you additional edge to edge support. It takes many years to become an expert and it takes over 3 hours for a master craftsman to manually stitch four rows of side stitching into our Emperor mattress. The side stitching not only creates additional edge support but is key to longevity. We want your mattress to last you many years and this will increase the durability of your mattress and spring.

What does GSM mean?
We refer to GSM when we talk about the amount of layers we put in our mattresses. We want you to know exactly what is in the mattress and what you are paying for. GSM stands for grams per square metre. For example, in our Regal Queen mattress you will find 1200g Laywool, 250g Pashmina, 200g Peruvian White Alpaca, 1000g Alpaca, 1000g Wool/Cotton. This is a total of 3650grams but that’s how many grams is in every square metre of the mattress. All our mattresses are also completely reversible, so the comfort is exactly the same on both sides – that’s a lot of filling!
